Mathematical Formula & Calculations

EMI calculations are based on reducing balance interest schedules calculated monthly:

\[\text{EMI} = \frac{P \times r \times (1+r)^n}{(1+r)^n - 1}\]
Where: P = Principal amount, r = Monthly interest rate (Annual % / 12 / 100), n = Tenure in months

Frequently Asked Questions

An EMI is a fixed payment amount made by a borrower to a lender at a specified date each calendar month. EMIs consist of both a principal component and an interest component. In the initial years of tenure, interest comprises the larger portion of the EMI, which gradually shifts to principal repayment towards the end of the loan.
EMI is calculated using the reducing balance formula: EMI = [P x r x (1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1], where P is the Principal loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12, then by 100), and n is the loan tenure in months.
A longer loan tenure reduces your monthly EMI installment, making it easier on your monthly budget. However, it significantly increases the total interest payable over the lifetime of the loan. A shorter tenure results in higher monthly EMIs but helps you close the loan faster and save massive interest costs.
Reducing balance amortization means that interest is charged monthly only on the outstanding principal balance of the loan, rather than the original loan amount. As you pay off principal each month, the interest amount decreases, accelerating the principal recovery rate.
